Sweet potatoes are both delicious an well as been very good for you. They come in a variety of colours. At Wickedfood Earth Farm we grow white, two types of orange and a blue/purple variety. They all have a distinctive taste:

The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato (Solanum tuberosum) and does not belong to the nightshade family, Solanaceae, but both families belong to the same taxonomic order, the Solanales. Like its name-sake, it originates from Central South America.

The orange sweet potatoes are softer and sweeter; the other varieties are drier and starchier.

Sweet potatoes contain almost twice as much fiber as other types of potatoes. One of the biggest reasons is it helps keep things moving along smoothly through your digestive system, which can help eliminate constipation, irregularity and discomfort.

More impressive about sweet potatoes is their high content of other nutrients. They’re full of Vitamins A, C, B3, B5, and B6, E, manganese, potassium, and copper (the purple sweet potato contains 150%  more antioxidants than blueberries). Vitamins C and E are potent antioxidant vitamins that play an important role in disease prevention and longevity.

Blood clotting, is a leading cause of death throughout the world but can be prevented, possibly by adding a little purple sweet potato into your diet. The chlorogenic acid in the sweet potato has been shown to break down blood clots and inhibit the enzymatic activity of procoagulant proteins and peptides. reducing inflammation.

B6 is the vitamin that is crucial in breaking down a substance called homocysteine, which contributes to hardening of the arteries and blood vessels. It helps keep the walls of these important blood passageways flexible and healthy which allows blood to flow freely.

Potassium plays an important role in lowering blood pressure by ridding the body of excess sodium and regulating fluid balance. It is also an important electrolyte that helps regulate the natural rhythm of the heart, and maintains normal function of the brain and central nervous system.

Beta-carotene or vitamin A is an important antioxidant. One medium sweet potato provides your body with the complete recommended daily allowance of vitamin A. It is useful in the prevention of several different types of cancer as it is one of the most potent antioxidants out there. It also is an excellent nutrient for eye health and has been linked to prevention of vision loss and macular degeneration.
