We are proud to introduce a special 3-course lunch featuring our selectively bred European Boar, one of the cornerstones of our 5-year pig breeding programme. These magnificent pigs offer an intense, robust flavour, with lean, dark red meat unlike any other pork you've tried.

3-course European Boar Pork Lunch
Join us at Wickedfood Earth Farm for this special lunch introducing European Wild Boar. For the last 5 years we've been selectively breeding and cross-breeding different pigs with the aim of creating the perfect South African free-range pig. Amongst the pigs in our gene pool are European boars, the "original" domestic pig. Now for the first time you’ll be able to taste this unique pig with its lean dark red flesh. For the lunch's main course we’ll be creating mixed roast platters of different cuts cooked in a variety of ways. And as always we’ll also be serving a starter charcuterie platter of farm cured meats, mezze, preserves, farm baked bread, and dessert.

Towards the end of each month we slaughter a pig. As free-range pig farmers we have a limited supply of ethically farmed and humanely slaughtered pork. For complete traceability we butcher, cure, vacuum pack and freeze everything on the farm. We distribute from the farm and Lonehill.

It's raining pigs at Wickedfood Earth Farm .
During the course of the last week we've had 3 successful farrowings, 34 piglets in total. We're now well on our way with our new cross pig, bred specifically for the free-range environment. They have Kolbroek, Duroc and European boar genetics, survive well outside in both hot and cold weather, with good foraging traits, meaning minimum added feed. And best of all they are producing good quality large litters as well as delicious meat.
All the barrows are destined for Christmas slaughter when they will be around 8kg - 10kg slaughtered, while selected gilts will be sold on for breeding.

A flashback to 2007 when @wickedfood hosted @slowfoodjohannesburg for a venison cooking and tasting evening. At the time Slow Food Johannesburg was in transition, moving away from an exclusive dinner club, towards the 3 principles of the international movement - ".....whole foods in the food service industry and at home; clean production methods that preserve the environment; and fair pricing for both consumers and producers......"

A new dynamic committee had just been elected under the leadership of the dynamic @timtruluck. For the next 8 odd years some sterling work was done by Slow Food in South Africa. Unfortunately over the last few years things have fallen apart. On the positive side there are rumours of new beginnings for Slow Food in South Africa .

Since our inception over 15 years ago Wickedfood Earth Farm has been living according to the 3 principles of @slowfood_international that, to us, are non negotiable.

Wickedfood Earth Farm is once again hosting a venison lunch next Sunday 29 September, limited space still available.
