Sweet and Sour Tomatillo

The tomatillo, also known as the Mexican husk tomato, is a plant of the nightshade family bearing green, yellow and purple fruit similar in look to the cape gooseberry. Tomatillos originated in Mexico. A staple of Mexican cuisine, they are eaten raw or cooked in a variety of dishes.

At Wickedfood Earth Farm we have been growing a wide variety of organic tomatillos for the last 10 years. These tomatillos are pickled in a sweet and sour thin syrup. Pickling mellows and changes the flavour, giving it a delicate, elusive perfume. Use in salads or as part of a mezze platter. Also great for Mexican salsas:

  • Fresh Salsa Verde – Chop half a bottle of sweet & sour tomatillos with one onion, 1 clove minced garlic, 2 tomatoes, 1 to 3 chillies, a handful of chopped coriander, 2-3 tablespoons of the sweet/sour syrup, and season.
  • Green salsa with Avo – Chop half a bottle of sweet & sour tomatillos with one finely chopped onion, 1 clove minced garlic, 3 tomatoes, 3 to 6 chillies, and a handful of chopped coriander. Fold in 1 mashed avocado pear, and season
