Growing your own food and cooking it can be an extremely rewarding pasttime.  Not only do you have full traceability of how your food was growing, but you also have the pleasure of enjoying the fruits of your labour.  Our cookbook of the week, The Edible Garden Cookbook takes you through the steps on how to grow and cook your own fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Arranged by season, The Edible Garden Cookbook is extremely well laid out.  Each chapter starts by explaining what to do in the garden during that season regarding planting, maintaining and picking. It then goes into more detail about the various crops not only how to grow them, but how to store, preserve and cook with them.

  • The Spring Garden – garden peas, potatoes, onions, asparagus, broad beans, beetroot, spring herbs.
  • The Summer Garden – tomatoes, beans, cucumber, salad greens & edible flowers, capsicum, eggplant, zucchini & squash, rhubarb, sweet corn, summer fruit, summer herbs.
  • The Autumn Garden – globe artichokes, avocado, pumpkin, carrots, olives, autumn fruit, autumn herbs.
  • The Winter Garden – brassicas – broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, Asian greens, mushrooms, spinach & silverbeet, citrus fruit, winter herbs.

In addition, the text is supported by fantastic illustrative photography, information on planning for production, planting charts and cultivation for success.

Each recipe has been triple-tested by The Australian Women’s Weekly Test Kitchen to guarantee success. And because The Edible Garden Cookbook is produced in Australia, growing advice is pertinent to South African conditions.

This is a book that we will definitely be using in our classes scheduled for our upcoming new cooking school in the country at Wickedfood Earth.

Wickedfood Cooking School runs cooking classes throughout the year at its purpose-built Johannesburg cooking studio. Cookery classes are run in the mornings and evenings 7 days a week (subject to a minimum of 12 people). The venue is also popular for corporate events and private functions – teambuilding cooking classes, birthdays, kitchen teas, and dinner parties with a difference. Our cooking lessons are hands-on, where every person gets to participate in the preparation of the dishes. They are also a lot of fun where you not only learn new skills, but get to meet people with similar interests. For corporate groups and team building cooking classes these events are a novel way of creating staff interaction or entertaining clients.
